Sleeping In Shanghai

sspencerGeneral Comments, Trading Lesson4 Comments

I returned from traveling in China a few days ago.  My body hasn’t made the time adjustment yet.  There is a 13 hour difference between NYC time and Shanghai time.  Night is day and day is night.  Yesterday I was reviewing the SMB Scans which are compiled after the close each day.  They consist of stocks in our tradeable universe that have traded in a noticeable manner on a particular day.

The one stock that caught my attention from the “weak scan” was COH.  It is a stock that has treated our desk very well the past few months as it had several nice breakouts.  What caught my attention last night when I reviewed the chart was the fact that it closed below an area it had been supporting for over one month.  It presented a simple technical short setup with very little risk.

As I thought to myself  “this is a good technical setup to mention in the AM meeting” I started to doze off a bit at my computer screen.  I think it was around 8:00AM Shanghai time and I hadn’t slept at all the prior night because of complete circadian confusion.  So guess what, I forgot to mention COH in the AM meeting, and I forgot to set a price alert at the good technical short prices.  I’m pretty sure you know how this story is gonna end.  Look at the charts below.

I’ve written it before and it is worth repeating.  Trading is a performance based job.  There is no excuse for not entering the idea in my GOOG spreadsheet last night.  No excuse for not executing the trade today.

  1. the scans are run on tradestation. we are only scanning our tradeable universe, which is the same universe that is tracked by the SMB Radar.
