From time to time I get an email from a trader whose results were awful. They might say:
Bella,
I had my worst day ever. I sized up and got crushed.
Or
Bella,
I had my worst day ever. I took my biggest rip ever.
Or
Bella,
I had my worst day ever. I got stopped out on one trade. I stink.
Often I continue reading and their analysis is spot on. They made a mistake here and there but since we focus on the process this was not an awful trading day. The result was but often they did so much right that this conclusion is an overreaction.
For all of you who have written to me about your worst trading day, here is a true I Had My Worst Day Ever:
Bella,
I had my best trading day ever. I am so the man. I put up 2k in three hours of work and then spent the rest of the day living the life.
I was out pretty late last night. Seeing a new young lady. We have one of those it’s really good when it’s good and really bad when it’s bad relationships. Last night was really good. I rolled in at 9:29, still a little hung over but able to see my screens. Fade Trader to my left was chirping about NFLX so I punched that up. Money Master then called out BIDU and switched over to that. BIDU is going down hard soon and I have been waiting to go All In with a short. BIDU held the offer a bit on the Open and I went for it. “Go Big or Go Home,” right? I got short 3k shares.
That young lady that I just started seeing shot me a gchat. She was coming into the city around noon for a job interview at Ralph Lauren and was hinting about taking her to lunch. I told her we would see but she is smokin so I started thinking about finding a way. BIDU crumbled during my gchat. I covered into a two point down, pocketed 2k, and exalted, “whose the big winner today Mikey?” It was 9:40.
I shot a text message to my girl and told her lunch was on me at Serafina. I had a few hours to kill. I checked out some movie times in case lunch led to something more. I shot out a slew of emails to my buddies about our weekend at Killington. Watched “The Office” on Hulu. Told Money Master and Fade Trader all about my new girl. Heard about the one that Fades is trying to land. He really has to step up his game in the ladies department. Shut down my screens and headed out to enjoy the rest of the day.

Have you fired him yet?
If I am not mistaken that was a 2k in in 20 mins, Rolled in at 9:15…and yup spot on the part being hung over. it could have been NFLX, BIDU or possibly MER or CFC. And you know those were “fun” to trade. And what ever happen to that young lady?
What’s sad is there are 1000’s of others that can’t even get an interview. Hopefully next time he blows up his entire account.
I don’t think it’s for real, it’s just an example of how a ‘worse day ever’ looks – a day in which you learn nothing, don’t have the desire to do so and..worse of all…you mark some good money on your p&l. Ouch!
Funny how after reading your blog today, after a few weeks of even days, I’m down big!!
Seems like the “young lady” is the market to that guy. Good when it’s good, bad when it’s bad, never lasts kinda thing… 😉 – funny post Mike, thanks.
Great story. Reminds me of my best day: The money was flying left and right at my station. The guy on my left was red, the guy on my right was black. There were only 2 spots on the whole area that were green. I decided to take the offer. Dropped $1k and as I watched the wheel spin I knew that little ball was going to hit it!! Sure enough I doubled my money in 2 minutes!
