There is lots of talk about Coach Ryan the coach before tonight’s J…E…T…S Patriots battle. Coach Ryan is a believer in making sure his players believe. In a Bloomberg.com column the importance of belief found another sport:
Speaking of winning, Duke basketball’s Mike Krzyzewski, one
of the most respected and successful coaches in team sports,
likes to use the same four words as Ryan. He considers them the
most important words in all of sports.
Worth noting is that these four words were the last thing
Coach K, as Krzyzewski is known, uttered to Christian Laettner
and Grant Hill before they perfectly executed one of the most
improbable and thrilling plays in college basketball history.
“I believe in you,” Coach K told them. Hence, they
believed that a ball could be thrown the length of the court,
corralled and converted all in 2.1 seconds. Here were two of the
most talented and accomplished players in college basketball
that season and Krzyzewski still felt the need to issue that
reminder. Hill once told me that, at that moment, it mattered to
hear those words.
In One Good Trade I shared a story of a trader who I seemingly everyday
implored could do it. I have spent many moments, closed door, looking right into their eyes moments, saying flatly, “You can do it!” During “Wall Street Warriors” a lecture was filmed of me exalting to new trainees, “you must believe.” Who believes in you as a trader? Somebody needs to!

Mr. Bella,
Spot on!
As I’ve recently written in my journal, this has been the loneliest time in my life and as a developing trader you have to be weary of the psychology that surrounds you. What would your family who has supported you through college think when you’re out there working day and night (and day) going through your ‘learning curve?’ What would your friends think of you when you aren’t making the same amount as them (initially)? How does your significant other react to the possibility that s/he has to take upon more of the financial obligations? What does the numbers on your trading report tell you month after month? As much as you can seek refuge at the end of the day with your Head Trader, Sr. Trader, Coach, Mentor, significant other, mom, best friend…. this WILL be the loneliest time of your life unless you have the courage to believe in yourself first. You do have to be ready to accept the possibility of you doing this on your own…..
However…. a person that is surrounded in a caring and nurturing environment that provides the guidance, support system, and moral belief to him/her would be more likely to sustain the energy and follow through with their pursuit of becoming a consistently profitable trader. Hope everyone is having a great year so far and best of wishes in 2011!
Very agree! My best days so far were after conversation with my mentor. It’s very important, specially in the beginning.
